#4 Ranked Wood Ducks head to Illinois for Season Opener
The 2023 season is underway! Pre-season rankings came out and the #4 women's volleyball team has been practicing for the last couple of weeks. They are excited to get their season going this weekend in Rockford, IL at the Opening Weekend Tournament. There will be 71 NJCAA teams competing, and Century will be tested early and often. Finishing up the weekend, the Wood Ducks will be facing off with #2 Owens and #1 DuPage. "Last season was a lot of fun and the hard work paid off. We have some familiar faces and a lot of new ones. I'm excited for the season, but it's unfair to this team to expect the same success. We aren't the same team from last season, and we will form our own identity once we get playing." Says head coach Jay Kam.
While the success has been nice, the overall purpose of the program has not changed. The main goal of the program is to make sure the athletes get what they need in terms of education and growth as individual people. "We had a number of academic all-Americans last year and my goal is to double that number this year." -Coach Kam. While getting ready for the upcoming school year, playing volleyball, and fundraising, the athletes took time out of their busy schedule last week to volunteer at a local assisted living facility where they sang, danced, did charades, gave massages, and painted nails. Coach Kam is passionate about being in the community. "We have received much support since we started the program a few years ago. We are a community college, and it is important that we volunteer and give back to the community when we can."
