Century Knocks Off Another Top 5 Team, moves into 1st Place
The #7 ranked Century College Women's Volleyball team finished off another impressive week going 4-0, bringing their overall season record to 20-4. The Wood Ducks defeated DCTC (25-14, 25-27, 25-17, 25-6), Western Technical College (25-19, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16), #5 ranked MN State Fergus Falls (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23), and Riverland CC (25-10, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20). The biggest matchup came Friday night against #5 MN State Fergus Falls, who was previously undefeated in the MCAC Southern division. Sophomore Simone Mortel (Vadnais Heights, MN) stepped up and finished the evening with 17 kills and a hitting efficiency of 0.600. This is the second time this season where she has taken over a match against a top 5 opponent. Freshman Kiyomi Callahan (St Paul, MN) and Sophomore Emma Crandell (Forest Lake, MN) each contributed with 14 and 13 kills apiece. Sophomore Mackay Williams (Salmon, ID) played some fantastic defense with 23 digs until she had to exit with an injury. Century is now tied for first place in the MCAC Southern Division.
Gabi Schwirtz (FR - Plato, MN) and Kiyomi Callahan continue their strong seasons finishing with 165 assists and 43 kills for the week respectively.
The match vs MN State Fergus Falls was also sophomore night. This may have been the last time sophomores Kailey Mroszak (Wyoming, MN), Adalyn Mueller (Woodbury, MN), Emma Crandell, Simone Mortel, and Mackay Williams play a home match for the Wood Ducks.
Coach Jay Kam stated, "I cannot thank these players enough for all they have contributed to the program. My main goal as a coach isn't just to win, although that is fun. It's to make sure we help our players learn and grow. Everyone has their own journey and I hope Century College and this program has given them the experiences they were looking for."
Century has two matches left for the season, both on the road. On Wednesday, October 19, Century heads to Rochester for a 630pm match and then the team travels to Worthington on Saturday, October 22, for a match against MN West at noon.
The Region/District tournament is October 28-29 with the site to be determined. Century still has an opportunity to host this tournament if they are the #1 seed from the Southern Division.
